Story Behind the Story
In 2011, I journeyed to India on a service-learning trip. The month I spent travelling and learning from activists about global issues of systemic injustice transformed my worldview and my life trajectory.
In 2012, I returned to India to intern in the communications office of a women's and children's home. It was there - spending my days reporting stories on residents, my evenings tutoring girls in English, and my nights reading under my mosquito net - that I discovered journalism.
In 2014, I moved to Kolkata, India, where I joined the work of International Justice Mission (IJM) as a communications fellow. For the next two years, I reported stories on sex trafficking of minors - breaking the news of trafficker convictions, interviewing police, prosecutors, and social workers, and sharing survivor stories.
